Introducing the winner of the New Designer Mentorship and one of the winners of the Future of Games New Designer Showcase: Jules Dewey!
Jules Taylor Dewey is a writer and illustrator currently based in Olympia, Washington. With an academic background in ancient history, literary studies, and philology, her creative work is heavily rooted in research and historical context. She works at the crossroads of fantasy and reality, creating character-driven narratives that explore how self-identity is informed by cultural memory.
These interests have culminated in her first RPG project, Les Fées Des Houles. This card based solo-journaling RPG is rooted in the folklore and endangered language of Brittany, the peninsular Celtic nation of western France. In the game, the player must unravel the life of a houles fairy, who has settled in the American south-east after being driven from their homeland by an unknown force. Their immortality will work against the player as they piece together character’s past, work through their present circumstances, and interpret omens of their future. Through mechanics centered on reflection, Les Fées Des Houles examines immigration, isolation, grief, and the ongoing work of self-definition.
